Individual preference for using of one side of the body such as manipulating objects is common in animals. However, the answers to the question of how such phenonmon has evolved remain much uknown, and there are a lot more questions worthy to be explored in this area. For example, although it has been found in humans the left-hand and right-hand people differ in their lifespan, it remains unclear whether such an association exists in wild animals. Our project is currently using a wild bird, the Yellow-bellied tit (Pardaliparus venustulus), as a study subject to study the laterality of wild birds and its fitness consequence.
